Biological Atlas of Insulin Resistance - BAIR

The project is led by Professor James Scott (Imperial College London) with co-investigators at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and funded for five years (from 2002) through the Wellcome Trust Thematic Programme.

Its goals are to:

  • To generate a prototypic atlas of normal and abnormal insulin action principally through analysis of cell lines and rodent models of insulin resistance using a range of functional genomics tools.
  • To develop, validate and refine this biological atlas through new hypothesis driven research directed towards improved understanding of gene, protein and metabolite function in relation to insulin action and the pathogenesis of insulin resistance.
  • To create an integrated knowledge framework to facilitate dissection of the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in human disease phenotypes with the ultimate aim of improving human health.
